Bicycling is all about the landscape. It connects you intimately with the hills.

In the John Day Basin, we are cyclist-friendly! There are a variety of riding experiences, from nearly flat, river-hugging routes, to challenging mountainous terrain. Our gravel, county-back-county roads are great places for fat-tired bikes, with little traffic (rare traffic, in fact) and plenty of amazing vistas. We will be glad to help you plan a bike adventure in the PaleoLands.

Mountain bikes tackle Black Butte Road

Mountain bikes tackle Black Butte Road—one of many Wheeler County backroad cycle routes.

Each year, the Oregon PaleoLands Institute sponsors a fully-supported spring and fall ride. The Rockin’ and Rollin’ Season Finale will take place October 17,18,19 2008. The 3 day event will take you through challenging and amazing routes in the John Day Fossil Beds. We will provide a full sag-wagon service, meals and bike-friendly staff.  Camping available at Spray Riverside Park or call us and we will help you arrange lodging. Please find more information and sign up for this ride on our Adventure Catalog schedule.
